THE NEW SIGHTS OF MONPERA

By Mariyah Tulqibthiyah - Juli 22, 2022

Hi, Seekers! Welcome to healingseekers.blogspot.com. Thanks for visiting my blog.

Here, I’m going to tell you the information about one of the tourism objects in Palembang, South Sumatra.

Without being curious any longer, let's explore new things from here!

Palembang City, in South Sumatra Province, is one of the big cities on Sumatra Island. This city is famous for its traditional foods, cultures, and tourism objects. You can find many interesting tourism objects in the form of natural, cultural, and man-made resources. Additionally, there are also tourism objects that can be reached by land routes and water routes. The transportations that can be used on land routes, for example, are cars, motorbikes, tricycles, bicycles, and LRT. Meanwhile, boats, speedboats, water bus, and ships are the example of water transportations which usually located at the pier of Musi River.

MONPERA

While you are on vacation to Palembang, a recommendation of tourism object that you can visit is Monpera (Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat). Why it must be a monument? Is there a playground for children? Eitss, don't you worry. Now, Monpera becomes one of the historical tourism objects in Palembang City that has developed several attractions with a contemporary approach as the purpose. Over there, you can learn about history, exercise, make a content in your social media, or take your kids for a walk.

Let’s find out more about Monpera with me…

Monpera which stands for Monument of People Struggle is located at Merdeka street No. 1, exactly across from the Great Mosque of Palembang. In 2019, Monpera was not longer managed by the Palembang City Culture and Tourism Office, but it was managed by the South Sumatra Province Culture and Tourism Office. In Monpera, there are various historical collections related to the 5 days 5 nights war in Palembang.

Monpera has a unique architecture because it looks like a jasmine flower with five petals. The jasmine flower symbolizes the five residencies (Lampung, Bangka Belitung, Bengkulu, Jambi, and Palembang). There is also a huge eagle statue (Burung Garuda) on the wall. Under the statue, it is written the function and the meaning of Monpera architecture.

When you come to Monpera, you will see a view of the spacious and neat yard. The yard has been renovated into an area that looks more beautiful and comfortable to enjoy. The renovation of Monpera took two stages. The first stage started from October 2020 to June 2021 and the second stage started from October 2021 to December 2021.

Before Monpera was renovated, the tourism attractions were historical collections such as photo documentations, hero uniforms, currency collections, and the weapons (cannons, double lops, swords, and land mines). After it was renovated, the tourism attractions are not only historical collections but there are new sights that you can enjoy as tourists.

Here, I provide information about new sights in Monpera.

The Historical Pillars

These historical pillars were built with the aim of being historical signal for you as sports activists and pedestrians. You can read and learn about the history of the 5 days 5 nights war from the first day to the last day of war.

1.  On the 1st Day of Historical Pillar (January 1, 1947) the conditions of war at that time were the Dutch occupied the Mayor's Office, Post Office, and Resident's Office.

2.  On the 2nd Day of Historical Pillar (January 2, 1947) where the fighting again continues. Around Charitas, the Red Elephant Battalion Base continued to be surrounded.

3.  On the 3rd Day of Historical Pillar (January 3, 1947), Colonel Mollinger asked his army (land, sea, and air) to destroy the defense of the Indonesian Republic's army.

4.  On the 4th Day of Historical Pillar (January 4, 1947), the assistance for the Republic's army in Palembang came from Lampung that was led by Nurdin Panji and Lahat that was led by Harun Sohar.

5.  On the 5th Day of Historical Pillar (January 5, 1947), the negotiations took place in the afternoon at Charitas Hospital.

Jogging Track

One of the sports facilities that was built in Monpera yard is a jogging track or often known as cycling track. Unfortunately, not many cyclists use this route because its main purpose is for pedestrians. On this jogging track, you can feel the atmosphere of Monpera from the side.

Moving from the jogging track, there is a large relief symbolizing the 5 days 5 nights war. Behind the relief, there is a slogan from Monpera, namely "Patah Tumbuh Hilang Berganti".

The meaning of the slogan is that when a hero dies fighting for freedom, there would be other heroes who would continue the struggle.

The Tanks

These are the tools of war used by the fighters in the 5 days 5 nights war against the Dutch troops. These are all original war tools placed in the front area of Monpera. Now these tanks are more beautiful because they have been repainted so it adds to the impression of Monpera’s beauty. You can see this tank but can't get on it to keep the item safe.

Water Fountain

The water fountain was built to give more attraction in Monpera yard. It was built in front of large eagle statue and there is a five-square symbol in the middle of the fountain that symbolizes the 5 days 5 nights war. This fountain is not turned on every time because there are certain times it will be turned on by the officers periodically.

Colorful Tunnels

This building is inspired by the existing attraction at the Jakabaring Sport Center. This is also a popular attraction in Monpera because of its colorful shape that add to the beautiful impression of this tunnel. There are two colorful tunnels in Monpera. They are on the right and left of the Monpera Museum. You can use this colorful tunnel as a photo spot that is very instagramable.

The Miniature of Musi River

A miniature or replica of the Musi River was built in the right side of Monpera. It was built to support the attraction of the water fountain. This miniature symbolizes that South Sumatra has the longest river in Sumatra Island, Musi River.

Playground

Not far from the relief of the Monpera’s slogan, there is a playground for your children. The facilities that can be enjoyed by the children such as swings, slides, seesaw, rotating bowls, and colorful replica pens makes attractiveness of this playground. Other facilities that you can find are the garden chairs and the security post to maintain security in the rear of the Monpera yard.

Parkour Park

This is also a new sport facility in Monpera. If you come to Monpera, you should try these parkour challenges because this park provides challenging spots for those who like parkour. There is also a mural art that will attract you to take pictures as well.  Previously, young people who loved parkour did parkour movements in public places such as Kuto Besak fort, Kambang Iwak, and so on. But they are often chased away by security officers because it can endanger themselves and disturb the comfort of other visitors. So, Monpera provides facilities for young people who love parkour to be able to practice their hobbies there.

The South Sumatra Provincial Tourism Office has prepared several security personnel to maintain security in the Monpera area. Monpera provides two security posts at the front and rear of the yard that consists of five security personnel.

Due to Monpera was being taken over by the South Sumatra Provincial Culture and Tourism Office in 2019, the entrance ticket can be paid voluntarily without the ticket rates as long as the management has not provided any provisions regarding the current ticket rates in Monpera.

Monpera Operation Hours

  • 08.00 a.m – 05.00 p.m (Every day for Monpera Museum)
  • 24 hours (Every day for Monpera Park)

So, there are many new things you can do here besides learning about history. For Seekers who are on vacation in Palembang city, let's make Monpera as one of the lists of your tourism objects. But remember, you must keep the cleanliness in the Monpera Museum and Monpera Park.

    See you, Seekers 😊
